Local shopping centers anchored by Wegmans, Aldi, Fresh Market and Walmart sell for combined $110M

Four years after a local family sold them off to a Northern Virginia buyer, a quartet of grocery-anchored shopping centers in the region are once again under new ownership thanks to a nine-figure deal.

Rosenthal Properties last week sold Parham Plaza, Staples Mill Square, Stonehenge Village and Ridge Shopping Center for a combined $110 million, according to Henrico and Chesterfield county property records. The four shopping centers total around 592,000 square feet.

STEM school launches in Vienna with camps teaching kids how to code

A Texas-based technology education company has branched out into Vienna.

The school iCode launched its first Virginia franchise in the town earlier this month and is now hosting camps on game building, robotics and other tech skills for students out on break for the winter.

Donutchew Brings Mochi Donuts, Bubble Tea To Vienna

VIENNA, VA — Vienna just got a bit sweeter with the opening of Donutchew Monday in a former Starbucks location.

Donutchew, a Northern Virginia-based business, is open at 107 Maple Ave W. As the business name suggests, the featured menu item is the mochi donut, a dense and chewy donut with a ring shape and made with glutinous rice flour. According to Roongnapa Kaewprasit, who owns the business with her husband, there are 12 flavors offered daily and about 20 total. Seasonal flavor options are also planned. Mochi donuts are sold as one, by the half dozen or by the dozen.

Aquarium shop Reefology RVA dives into larger storefront in Henrico

After testing the waters for two years in Midlothian, a local aquarium store has scaled up with a move to Henrico.

Reefology RVA, which specializes in saltwater aquariums, is preparing to reopen at 1561 Parham Road in Ridge Shopping Center, near Regency.

The 1,200-square-foot shop is a big upgrade for owner Christopher Kilgore, who started Reefology in a 400-square-foot spot at 11900 Hull Street Road.

WashREIT Unloads $168M Retail Portfolio in Transition to Multifamily

Washington, D.C.-based WashREIT has sold a portfolio of eight retail assets in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland for $168.3 million.

This is the latest move as part of the real estate investment trust’s strategy to transition to a strictly multifamily REIT. Earlier this year, the company sold a 12-asset, D.C.-region office portfolio, totaling a combined 2.371 million square feet, to Brookfield Asset Management for $766 million.
